El Golfo is a semi-circular Volcanic Crater (half of it has been eroded by the sea) filled with Sea-water that has filtered through the black sand that separates the lagoon from the sea. It was formed from the volcanic eruptions of 1730.
The lagoon, known as El Charco de los Clicos, which fills the base of this semicircular crater, is a result of flooding, and its green colour is from the algae that inhabit its waters contrasting with a black sand beach and weird looking rock formations make for quite a spectacular site.
The volcano made of porous lava ash has through the action of time given rise to spectacular formations.
This lake has been declared a natural reserve which prohibits bathing.
El Golfo can be reached by heading towards Yaiza and then following signs to the village of El Golfo. In this village lying on a marvellous bay near the Timanfaya National Park is worth checking out for its restaurants facing the sea.
